Senior Art Exhibition: Ava Cieplinski and Hope Selvitelli

From February 14-24, the class of 2022 artist series showcased artwork from Ava Cieplinski ’22 and Hope Selvitelli ’22 in the Tremaine Art Center gallery. Their art show reception was on February 15 from 6 to 7:30 pm in the Lee Roberts Gallery.

Over the last four years, Ava has found refuge in art at Suffield, taking studio art classes, doing art special for two terms, and doing ceramics and photography in her free time. She even helped make bowls that were donated to a soup kitchen her freshman year. She’s also been an active member in the performing arts department, participating in the musical Billy Elliot and Guitar Show last spring. Though she’s looking to major in marine biology in a school near the ocean where she can surf, she’d like to keep art in her life, whether it be in her free time at home over breaks or in an art course at school. She’d even love to shape her own surfboard someday where it intertwines both of her passions into not only the surf aesthetic in art, but the art of surfing. In her artist statement, Ava says, “I tend to get caught up in the swelling storm of life by focusing on trying not to sink rather than swimming... Just like the ocean, my art allows me to reflect the depths of knowledge and insight I have gained through the progression of the ever-changing tides of my personal odyssey. Art is a way that allows us to hold on to who we are in this world where it is so easy to try and be like everyone else. It’s been my lifeboat for as long as I can remember.”

In her artist statement, Hope says, “Freshman year, I started taking Art 1 with Mrs. Fuller to fill my art credit. However, soon I wanted more. I tried taking a ceramics class over the summer and discovered that it wasn’t for me, but it was exciting to start something new. In my sophomore year, I moved onto photography, which I enjoyed until the year got cut short because of COVID-19. Junior year, I wanted to challenge myself with graphic design, something I had never done before. I am the harshest critic of my own work; nonetheless, something must have gone well as this year I got the opportunity to become a graphic design teaching assistant alongside Mrs. Graham. Through four years and four different artistic disciplines, I have developed my style that hopefully shines through at my Senior Showcase. There is still so much I want to create and do with my time at Suffield, but this is a good start.”
